Are you confused? If you are, you're not alone.
How do I choose which product to use for my project?
This is a very common question. We're hoping to clear some of this up for you in our QQuilts Blog, today. So let's get started!
There are five main things to consider when choosing a stabilizer, project, fabric, texture, application and end result.
First, the project. You must assess what kind of added stability the project is needing for creation. Do you need a lot, like with most knits, or just a little. Perhaps you need a topper, as well as a bottom stabilizer.
Second, the fabric for your project must be considered. Looking at your current project are you working with a single layer, or multiple layers of fabric? What type of fabric are you using? Is your fabric a natural woven, knit, or synthetic? What is the weight of your fabric? Is it light, medium, or heavy?
Third, is texture. Does your fabric have a nap, varied or pronounced texture? Terry cloth, velvet, polar fleece, embossed leather and vinyl are some fabrics that have textures.
Fourth, is desired application. When creating your project, at this stage, will your fabric stand alone like when using free motion, will you hoop your fabric? Is your project too bulky or too delicate to hoop. Are you concerned about hoop marks?
Fifth, is your desired end result. This is the last and possibly the most important thing to consider when choosing a stabilizer. Will you be able to hide the stabilizer inside your finished project? Are you wanting the project to remain flexible and soft? Is your project reversible? Will your project be worn? Will your project hang or be folded and stored? There are many questions you need to ask yourself about your project regarding what you want it to look like and how it will be used when it's finished.
Now that you have explored these five things to be considered, we can now determine which stabilizer to use. To continue, read...Which Stabilizer Do I use? - Part 2, to learn more.
